policy issues

Each year, the California Immigrant Policy Center identifies important immigrant-related policy issues being considered in Sacramento. The Policy Center plays a leadership role on these issues, working alongside advocates, policy makers, and community members to support policies that benefit all Californians.

As home to the largest immigrant population in the country, it is critical for California to implement policies aimed at supporting immigrant families and integrating immigrants into our communities, schools and businesses. Investing in California's immigrants will allow California to continue to reap the enormous benefits of its immigrant communities whose economic and cultural contributions have helped to make California one of the largest economies in the world. CIPC supports those policies that advance the well-being of immigrant individuals and families and encourage integration in order to improve the quality of life for all Californians.

During 2006, CIPC engaged in several successful legislative efforts. CIPC sponsored two bills that Gov. Schwarzenegger signed into law. The first bill made permanent the Naturalization Services Program, a state program that helps immigrants become U.S. citizens. The second bill provides assistance to victims of human trafficking. CIPC also successfully worked to preserve immigrants' access to vital safety net health and human services programs through the budget process.

During 2007, CIPC will work with legislators and advocates in Sacramento to support policies that promote pro-immigrant budget and fiscal planning, and address the needs of immigrants and their families through legislative efforts.
