Newsom’s budget signals hopeful, humane approach to border

Today, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced a proposed investment of $20 million for an immigration rapid response program to support community-based organizations in addressing the situation at the U.S.’s Southern Border and $5 million for immediate assistance at the border. The Budget also includes an ongoing investment of $75 million for immigration-related legal and community-based services. In response to these developments, Cynthia Buiza, Executive Director of the California Immigrant Policy Center, issued the following statement:

Today, Governor Newsom’s proposed new state investments offer a ray of hope and an important recognition of our values of compassion and common humanity. We are heartened to see this new administration take a proactive, humane and welcoming approach.

This stands in stark contrast to President Trump’s hate-filled, racist policies, which have created a crisis of the administration’s own making at the Southern Border. Instead of welcoming people fleeing extreme violence, the federal government has subjected families and children to tear gas and detention facilities so cold they are called ice-boxes.

We look forward to working with our partners in the border region to advance justice in the face of the administration’s brutal inhumanity.
